Science For society is a Registered Organisation under Society Reg. Act 1950 (Registration No. 543/1983-84) and is a Registered organization in Niti-Ayog. Govt. of India. The society was inaugurated by the then Vice-Chancellor, Patna University. Dr. Kedar Nath Pd. (Prof. of Economics) and Dr. G.P.Sinha, was in the Chair. Prof. S.K.Mishra, was the first President with Dr. S.K.Ganguli as Secretary. The organization was Registered with Prof. Mishra as President and Dr. S.P Verma Reader in Physics as General Secretary in 1984. Such seminars on issues pertaining to development of Bihar, continued and in 1987-Bharat Jan Vigyan Jatha(BJVJ) – a national event of science communication was launched in which the society was state coordinating agency. The events were conducted in all major part of Bihar. The next important land mark was organization of BJVJ -92 in all the districts of Bihar, supported by Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India and in collaboration with Bihar Council on Science and Technology(BCST) and State Council of Educational Research and Training(SCERT). The society conducted state level campaign as "Year of Scientific Awarness-2004" and International Year of Physics-2005. During all these 38 years of its existence the society has been nodal agency of NCSTC, DST. Govt. of India as well as BCST and SCERT, Coordinated "Science Communication" activities and organizing state and district level National Children's Science Congress.
